FTTH - Fiber to the Home

Fiber to the home (FTTH) is the use of optical fiber from a central point directly to individual buildings to provide unprecedented high-speed Internet access. FTTH dramatically increases the connection speeds and is the only future proof solution for the digital highway enabling internet, TV, telephony and all the future services multimedia and IoT will bring.

Networks can be either P2P (point-to-point) or P2MP (point-to-multipoint). In a P2P network, there are no splitters or similar between the switch in the POP or central office and the home access point, which enables flexibility in speed and application. As both ends are active the requirements on connectivity can be lower than in P2MP networks. Grade C at the very ends is good enough and grade B in between in the POP is only advisable.

In P2MP networks you have more connectors in the signal’s path, and as a result the requirements on the connectivity will be higher, with at least grade B.
